Capture data in dedicated capture mode

Applies To: Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2003 R2, Windows Server 2003 with SP1, Windows Server 2003 with SP2

To capture data in dedicated capture mode

  1. Open Network Monitor.

  2. If prompted, select the local network from which you want to capture data by default.

  3. On the Capture menu, click Dedicated Capture Mode.

  4. On the Capture menu, click Start.

Notes

  • To perform this procedure, you must be a member of the Administrators group on the local computer, or you must have been delegated the appropriate authority. If the computer is joined to a domain, members of the Domain Admins group might be able to perform this procedure.

  • To start Network Monitor, click Start, click Control Panel, double-click Administrative Tools, and double-click Network Monitor.

  • If you add a network interface, you must restart Network Monitor before you can capture data on that interface.

  • During the capture, select options in the Dedicated Mode dialog box.

  • In dedicated capture mode, Network Monitor does not display or refresh capture statistics when frames are copied to the temporary capture file. This frees more resources for capturing data.

  • Use dedicated capture mode if Network Monitor drops frames due to a lack of resources.

Information about functional differences

  • Your server might function differently based on the version and edition of the operating system that is installed, your account permissions, and your menu settings. For more information, see Viewing Help on the Web.
