Administration and management tools

Routing and Remote Access includes the following routing administration and management tools:

  • Routing and Remote Access

    The primary administration and management tool for configuring routing is Routing and Remote Access (available in the Administrative Tools folder in Control Panel).

    With Routing and Remote Access, you can:

    • Configure and enable, disable, start, and stop the Routing and Remote Access service.

    • Manage local and remote routers.

    • Configure routing behavior and routing protocols.

    • Configure demand-dial routing behavior.

    • Configure remote access policies.

    • Monitor active connections.

    • Configure local logging behavior.

    Members of the Administrators group can use Routing and Remote Access. If the computer is a member of a domain, members of the Domain Administrators group can use Routing and Remote Access.

  • The Netsh command-line utility

    You can use the Netsh command-line utility to locally configure routing from the command prompt. The Netsh utility can use script files to automate configuration tasks.

Notes

  • You cannot use a server running a member of the Microsoft® Windows Server 2003 family to administer servers running Microsoft Windows NT® 4.0 and Remote Access Service (RAS) or to administer servers running Windows NT 4.0 and Routing and Remote Access Service (RRAS). For more information, see Administration tools in mixed environments.

  • You cannot remotely configure AppleTalk routing properties with Routing and Remote Access.
