Creating Virtual Directories with IIS 6.0

Applies To: Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2003 R2, Windows Server 2003 with SP1

You can create as many virtual directories as you want. Create virtual directories that match the structure of your newsgroup hierarchy.

Important

You must be a member of the Administrators group on the local computer to perform the following procedure or procedures. As a security best practice, log on to your computer by using an account that is not in the Administrators group, and then use the runas command to run IIS Manager as an administrator. At a command prompt, type runas /User:Administrative_AccountName "mmc %systemroot%\system32\inetsrv\iis.msc".

Procedures

To create a virtual directory

  1. In IIS Manager, expand the local computer, and then expand the NNTP virtual server that you want.

  2. Right-click Virtual Directories, point to New, and then click Virtual Directory.

  3. Follow the New NNTP Virtual Directory Wizard. Create a newsgroup subtree for this virtual directory.

  4. Select either File System (a local location) or Remote as a storage location for the news content. This location can be configured later if necessary by clicking Contents in the Virtual Directory box.

  5. If you selected File System, type a path to the local folder, or click Browse to select a folder. If you selected Remote, type a path to the remote location, or click Browse to select a remote folder. For a remote location, you must also provide a user name and password that Microsoft NNTP Service can use to log on to that remote computer. Type a name or click Browse to search for one. Click Check to ensure that the user name/password combination you plan to use is valid.

Note

If you store content in a remote location, the remote computer must be configured with at least read/write permissions for the user name you provide. Make sure that the remote location is secure and that it is maintained by trusted administrators.

To modify a virtual directory

  1. In IIS Manager, expand the local computer, and then expand the NNTP virtual server that you want.

  2. Right-click the virtual directory that you want to modify, and then click Properties.

  3. Change the options in the virtual directory's Properties box as needed.
