Recommendations for Backing Up and Restoring the MIIS Database

Applies To: Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2003 R2, Windows Server 2003 with SP1, Windows Server 2003 with SP2

The following recommendations will help you to optimize your process for maintaining the MIIS database:

  • In addition to making regular SQL Server database backups, use the Windows Server 2003 Backup tool to create an Automated System Recovery (ASR) of the servers running MIIS 2003 and SQL Server 2000 on a regular (at least monthly) basis. You can use an ASR set to restore your servers if a disaster occurs.

For more information about creating an ASR set, see “Safeguarding your system” in Help and Support Center for Windows Server 2003.

  • Test backup and restore procedures on a regular basis and before a disaster occurs. As a guide, test your backup and restore procedures at least once every three months.

  • Always keep your backups offsite in a secure location, to lessen any losses that could occur from fire, disaster, or accident.

  • Make a full backup of your MIIS database everyday.

  • On SQL Server 2000, back up the master and msdb system databases at least monthly.

  • After you complete a backup, verify all your backup media.
