This document describes how Microsoft uses Network Load Balancing and related operational procedures to achieve the following technical and business objectives for the Microsoft.com Web site:
High availability. Provide Web site content that is always available to users.
Efficiency. Deliver Web content to users quickly, regardless of the number of concurrent sessions.
Scalability. Allow system administrators to add additional servers as necessary in a way that is transparent to users.
Ease of maintenance. Allow system administrators to maintain the Web site easily through a process that is transparent to users.
These objectives apply to the set of Network Load Balancing clusters described in this white paper. These objectives are similar to those of most Web sites. Therefore, the clustering implementations presented here should be valuable to businesses with similar goals.
