Starting, Stopping, or Pausing NNTP Virtual Servers

You can use IIS Manager in the Microsoft Management Console (MMC) to start, stop, and pause the default NNTP virtual server and any other virtual servers that you have created.

You can also start, stop, and pause the NNTP service. However, stopping the service stops all of the NNTP virtual servers that are running on your computer. When the NNTP service is stopped, you cannot use MMC to perform administrative functions on any NNTP virtual server.

It is important to make sure that only trusted and qualified administrators in your organization have the necessary permissions to start or stop an NNTP virtual server. For more information, see Restricting Operator Access.

When an NNTP virtual server is started, it accepts new connections from users. When you stop an NNTP virtual server, it disconnects current users and does not accept new connections. When you pause an NNTP virtual server, it does not accept new connections but continues to service existing connections. If you want to stop an NNTP virtual server but not disconnect users currently connected to the virtual server, you can also choose to shut down gracefully.

Important

You must be a member of the Administrators group on the local computer to perform the following procedure or procedures. As a security best practice, log on to your computer by using an account that is not in the Administrators group, and then use the runas command to run IIS Manager as an administrator. At a command prompt, type runas /User:Administrative_AccountName "mmc %systemroot%\system32\inetsrv\iis.msc".

Procedures

To start, stop, or pause an NNTP virtual server

  1. In IIS Manager, expand the local computer, and then click the NNTP virtual server that you want.

  2. On the Action menu, click Start, Stop, or Pause.

To shut down an NNTP virtual server gracefully

  1. Pause the virtual server to prevent new connections.

  2. To check for current users, use IIS Manager. Click Current Sessions. All current users are listed.

  3. If you want to block current users from posting new articles, click the NNTP Settings Tab, and then clear the Allow client posting check box.

  4. Stop the NNTP virtual server after all of the current users have disconnected.
