Change the garbage collection logging level to 1

Applies To: Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2003 R2, Windows Server 2003 with SP1, Windows Server 2003 with SP2

Check the directory service event log for event ID 1646, which reports the amount of disk space that you can recover by performing offline defragmentation.

The garbage collection logging level is an NTDS diagnostics setting in the registry.

Administrative credentials

To perform this procedure, you must be a member of the Domain Admins group.

Warning

The Registry Editor bypasses standard safeguards, allowing settings that can damage your system or even require you to reinstall Windows. If you must edit the registry, back up system state first. For information about backing up system state, see Introduction to Administering Active Directory Backup and Restore.

To change the garbage collection logging level

  1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit and then press ENTER.

  2. In Registry Editor, navigate to the Garbage Collection entry in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\NTDS\Diagnostics

  3. Double-click Garbage Collection, and for the Base, click Decimal.

  4. In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.
