Installing the FTP Service

Applies To: Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2003 with SP1

Before you can set up an FTP site, you must install the FTP service from Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel. For information about how to install the FTP service, see FTP Site Setup.

When you install the FTP service, a default FTP site directory is created with the home directory SystemDrive:\Inetpub\Ftproot.

There are two kinds of directories for FTP site content: user home directories and shared virtual directories. Each FTP site, except for those in Active Directory Isolation mode, must have a home directory that serves as the initial directory for users connecting to the site. In most configurations, each user has an individual directory under this site home directory. Create a virtual directory to hold additional content that is accessible to every user that logs on to the site, or if you want to use different URLs for different parts of the site. This virtual directory is different than the anonymous user home directory that is accessible to all anonymous users. Home and virtual directories for FTP sites function similarly to Web site directories. For more information about directories, see Creating and Setting Up Web Sites.

Note

Virtual directory names do not show up when listing the home directory of a user. Instead, virtual directories are used as if they were subdirectories of the user's home directory. A site administrator can publish these virtual directories in the site welcome message.
