How to Trace Requests Using the Performance Logs and Alerts MMC

Applies To: Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2003 R2, Windows Server 2003 with SP1

The Performance Logs and Alerts snap-in to the Microsoft Management Console (MMC) allows you to trace IIS providers. You can manually start a trace or you can configure Event Tracing for Windows to trace IIS providers according to a schedule. You cannot, however, configure verbosity levels (the amount of data returned by IIS providers) when using the Performance Logs and Alerts MMC. For more information about verbosity levels, see Verbosity levels.

To trace IIS providers using the Performance Logs and Alerts MMC

  1. From the Start menu, right-click My Computer, and click Manage.

  2. In the Computer Management MMC, expand the Performance Logs and Alerts node, right-click Trace Logs, and click New Log Settings.

  3. Type a name for the new trace session.

  4. In the trace session dialog box, click Nonsystem Providers.

  5. Click the Add button.

  6. In the Add Nonsystem Providers dialog box, select the providers you want to trace. Hold the CTRL key to select multiple providers.

  7. Click OK.

  8. If you want to start the trace immediately, click OK. If you want to configure other tracing options, including an automatic tracing schedule or the location and naming of log files, click the other tabs on this dialog box.

  9. To stop tracing, right-click the trace session you just created and click Stop in the drop-down menu.

To view the trace data, see How to Process and View Trace Log Files.
