Step 2. Determine the Components Required for Communicator Mobile for Java (2007 R2 Beta)

[This is preliminary documentation and is subject to change. Blank topics are included as placeholders.]

This section identifies the primary system requirements to support Communicator Mobile for Java in an Office Communications Server 2007 R2 deployment.

Feature phone running Java Mobile Edition software

Java Mobile Edition is an application platform for mobile and embedded devices. A Feature Phone is any phone that is not considered a Smartphone or PDA phone. Applications written for Java ME, including Communicator Mobile for Java, are portable across many different devices. The various devices provide unique capabilities, including differences in key mappings, display size and other network characteristics.

For this Beta release, Communicator Mobile for Java currently supports only the following mobile phones. Phone support is also a function of the particular telecom carrier that is selected.

Office Communications Server 2007 Deployment

Communicator Mobile for Java is supported in both Standard and Enterprise editions of Office Communications Server 2007 R2. Various server roles are listed below, and must be deployed to enable the advanced messaging and collaborative features in Communicator Mobile for Java.

Communicator Web Access Server

Microsoft® Office Communicator Web Access is a server that provides access through a browser-based client to Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 R2. Communicator Web Access server acts as a gateway between Communicator Mobile for Java and Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 R2. Communicator Web Access Server must be deployed in a Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 R2 deployment to enable Communicator Mobile for Java features.

Office Communicator

We recommend that you deploy Office Communicator 2007 R2 on client desktop computers for all users of Communicator Mobile for Java. Additionally, all Communicator Mobile for Java users who have enabled the simultaneous ring feature must upgrade client computers to Office Communicator 2007 R2. If the user fails to upgrade to Office Communicator 2007 R2, Office Communicator will fail when the user is signed into Communicator Mobile for Java. If the simultaneous ring feature is not enabled, the Office Communicator 2007 R2 upgrade is not required, although it is still recommended.

Outside Voice Control

Outside Voice Control is an application that is automatically installed during installation of the unified communications application server. This application enables a user to dial a number from Communicator Mobile for Java, but have the server infrastructure actually make the call and connect the two callers together. This service must be installed to support the Communicator Mobile Single Number Reach feature.

Mediation Server

A Mediation Server provides signaling and media translation between Office Communications Server 2007 R2 Enterprise Voice infrastructure and the public switched telephone network (PSTN) or a PBX. The Mediation Server is hosted inside the corporate firewall and is typically placed between the Office Communications Server environment and the Media Gateway.

PSTN Gateway

A PSTN gateway is used to perform protocol conversions between the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) and Office Communications Server 2007 R2.

Reverse Proxy

A reverse proxy is typically used in front of Web servers and presents a single interface to clients. It is also used to balance the load on a web server farm. Communicator Mobile for Java connects to Communicator Web Access Server through the Reverse Proxy.
