The following are the key steps to take during the Communicator Mobile for Java planning and deployment processes:

Verify Office Communicator 2007 R2 Deployment

A Standard or Enterprise edition deployment of Office Communications Server 2007 R2 is required to use Communicator Mobile for Java. To enable the various features including Instant Messaging, Single Number Reach, and Presence, additional server roles are required. The server roles include:

  • Communicator Web Access Server
  • Mediation Server
  • Edge Server
  • PSTN Gateway
  • Reverse Proxy

Furthermore, the Outside Voice Control application that is automatically installed on each Front End server must be activated and running.

Configure Client Download URL location

On the Communicator Web Access Server configure and publish a URI similar to https://extusers.contoso.com /mobile. Users connect to this URI from a computer or mobile browser and install the Communicator Mobile for Java software.

Install Communicator Mobile for Java client software on mobile device

  • From a computer browser, the user will save the Communicator Mobile for Java software to a local folder. Their Feature Phone is then connected to the computer via a cable supplied with the phone. Once this connection has been confirmed, Communicator Mobile for Java can then be installed on the Feature Phone.
  • From a mobile browser, the user will complete an Over the Air (OTA) installation. The user of the Feature Phone will use their mobile Internet browser to navigate to the download URL, ie, https://extusers.contoso.com/mobile. Once this connection is established, the user can begin installing the Communicator Mobile for Java software.
