Before you can access data from your application in SharePoint sites and custom applications, the Business Data Catalog (BDC) administrator must import the application definition to the BDC. Every time a developer or designer modifies the application definition, the administrator must delete the existing version and import the updated version.

Before you perform this procedure, confirm that:

  • You have read the topic Manage application definitions.

  • Your system is running either the Standard or Enterprise version of Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007.

    Important

Administrators must have at least View Only access to the Shared Services Administration site, and must have the Edit permission for the Business Data Catalog.

    Note

An application definition is an XML file that is imported to the Business Data Catalog for each application or service. It is not the same as the enterprise application definition for single sign-on.

Import application definition

Use the following procedure to import an application definition to the Business Data Catalog.

Import application definition

  1. On the Shared Services Administration site home page, in the Business Data Catalog section, click Import application definition.

  2. On the Import Application Definition page, in the Application Definition section, enter the location of the application definition.

  3. In the File Type section, select the type of application definition to import.

    Note

The author of the application definition file should know the file type for the application definition. If you do not know the file type, use the default option.

  4. In the Resources to import section, select the resources to import, as follows:

    • Select Localized Names to import names for business data fields in multiple languages.

    • Select Properties to import properties from the application definition.

    • Select Permissions to import permissions from the application definition.

  5. Click Import.
