Verify Server Services on the Remote Computer

Sometimes a system configured as a remote gateway or router is not functioning as a router. To confirm that the remote computer you wish to contact is set up to forward packets, you can either examine it with a remote administration tool (assuming that it is a computer you administer) or you can attempt to contact the person who maintains the computer.

You can contact the administrator responsible for a remote network using the databases maintained by InterNIC. The easiest way to do this is to use the Whois tool to find the appropriate person's name and contact information from the InterNIC database.

Windows 2000 does not have a local Whois tool. For more information about the local Whois tool, see the Whois link on the Web Resources page at https://windows.microsoft.com/windows2000/reskit/webresources . The Whois site provides the same functionality formerly provided by using Telnet.
