Internet presence scenario: Configure operations, services and content deployment

PerformancePoint Server 2007

Updated: December 18, 2008

Applies To: Office SharePoint Server 2007

Updated: 2008-12-18

This article is one of a series of articles that describes an end-to-end scenario that outlines how to plan, design, build, and maintain an enterprise's Internet presence Web site based on Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007.

After you have installed and configured the farm and deployed your solution, you will need to configure the ongoing operations for your environment.

Configure content deployment

Only farm administrators can configure content deployment jobs. Authors and end users can run content deployment jobs.

Using Central Administration, create content deployment paths and configure content deployment jobs to run as specified when planning the system.

Automated, Thursdays and Fridays: 00:00 -02:00

Upon approval

Goal: Fridays and Saturdays: 00:00 -02:00

Test that the content deployment jobs run as expected and document how to run content deployment jobs.

Document standards for setting up content deployment jobs.

Configure search

Search settings at the farm level and site collection level need to be configured separately in both the production farm and the authoring farm. The authoring farm will be indexed by the existing Search shared service provider (SSP) within the current collaboration environment — it will not have its own index server.

  • Add the authoring farm to the already-configured SSP that provides services to multiple Office SharePoint Server 2007 collaboration farms. Using an SSP across farms provides centralized administration of services and also reduces the number of services that provide the same role.

    • Update the search settings, such as crawl rules, at the farm level and the search settings, such as scopes, at the site-collection level in the authoring farm.

    • Crawl the authoring farm.

    • Test that search returns expected results for the authoring farm.

  • Configure the SSP on the production farm to provide search results to the users of the Internet site.

    • Set the search settings, such as crawl rules, on the farm level and the search settings, such as scopes, on the site-collection level.

    • Crawl the production farm.

    • Test that search returns expected results on the production site.

Search results are available for both sites.

Operations documentation that describes how to configure search.

Configure the business data catalog service

The business data catalog service is required for a site feature: the Web part connecting to the back-end career opportunities database.

Configure the authoring farm as the SSP for the business data catalog.

  • Configure the access account.

  • Configure authorization and shared services permissions for site administrators of the Internet presence site.

Configure backup and test recovery

The backup system for this environment requires that you use both Office SharePoint Server 2007 and SQL Server to perform backups. Office SharePoint Server 2007 backups protect the SSPs, and SQL Server backups protect the databases.

  1. Have the database team add the SQL Server databases for Office SharePoint Server to their backup system, on the agreed-upon schedule.

    Authoring farm databases

    Full backups: 02:30 – 05:00 daily

    Differential backups, every 15 minutes

    Production farm databases

Full backups Thursday night (before content deployment)

    Failover farm databases

Run full backups only, before and after patching

  2. Configure the SharePoint backups for each farm.

    Authoring farm

    Production farm

Saturday (after content deployment), back up the SSP, so that Search is backed up

    Failover farm

Test farm recovery by using both SQL Server and SharePoint backups.

  3. Document how to back up and recover the farm.

Configure database maintenance

To maintain the performance and reliability of your system, you must set up and run regular database maintenance jobs.

Provide the Database maintenance (Office SharePoint Server 2007) white paper to your database administration team, and ask members of the team to implement the recommendations that it contains.
