Internet presence scenario (Office SharePoint Server 2007)

The production and failover farms use a three-tier topology that is typical of Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 deployments on medium size server farms. For more information, see Chapter overview: Install Office SharePoint Server 2007 in a server farm environment.

The infrastructure planning process determined that the following hardware and software will be used for SharePoint farms in the production and failover environments.

  • The hardware architecture for every server that has Office SharePoint Server 2007 installed is 64-bit.

  • The operating system is Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise x64 Edition.

  • The database is SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition for 64-bit platforms.

  • All SharePoint deployments are Office SharePoint Server 2007, 64-bit edition.

Important

All software on each server is updated with the latest service pack or software update. In addition, the production and failover farms are updated to the same version number and are consistent with the development and authoring environments.

The following illustration shows the components of the production farm and the failover farm, as well as the basic flow of code and content.

Production and failover farms

The numbered flows in the preceding illustration are as follows.

  1. Administrators deploy the site collection from the authoring farm to a staging site collection for quality control.

  2. Administrators deploy the approved site collection to the publishing site collection and to the failover publishing site collection.

  3. Developers bundle site elements as solution packages and deploy them to the production farm and the failover farm.

1. Deploy the failover farm

The failover farm uses a three-tier deployment of Office SharePoint Server 2007 that consists of the following servers.

  • A Microsoft SQL Server 2005 database server.

  • One application server.

  • Two front-end Web servers.

Action

  • Deploy Office SharePoint Server 2007 to the farm servers.

  • Install all the available service packs and software updates for Office SharePoint Server 2007.

Outcome

A fully functional three-tier SharePoint farm.
