Backing up your Microsoft Office Project Server 2007 deployment consists primarily of backing up the Microsoft SQL Server databases associated with Office Project Server 2007 and either Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 or Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007. This is best done using the backup and recovery tools provided with SQL Server.

Depending on the nature of your deployment, there may be items not contained in the databases, such as customizations, that should be backed up separately. Additionally, SharePoint Products and Technologies offer a recycle bin feature and Office Project Server 2007 an administrative backup and restore feature that can be accessed by system administrators. These features are useful for recovering data when individual items have been deleted.

This article covers items that fall outside the regular SQL Server database backups needed to protect your system, including the following:

  • Project Web Access Administrative Backup and Restore

  • Protecting binary files

  • Protecting SharePoint Products and Technologies data

  • Protecting Office SharePoint Server 2007 search

  • Protecting configuration settings

Project Web Access Administrative Backup and Restore

Project Web Access Administrative Backup and Administrative Restore are intended to be used as a secondary backup solution that you can use to back up and recover specific objects. This tool is not intended to be used as a primary disaster recovery solution for Office Project Server 2007.

You can use Project Web Access Administrative Backup and Administrative Restore to back up and recover projects, Enterprise Resource Pools and Enterprise Calendars, Enterprise Custom Fields, the Enterprise Global Template, view definitions, system settings, and category and group settings.

Protecting binary files

In the event that you need to restore a system, we recommend that you reinstall the operating system, Office Project Server 2007, and software updates. Keep copies of all the operating system, software, and software update media both onsite and offsite.

Protecting SharePoint Products and Technologies data

Office SharePoint Server 2007 and Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 data is stored in SQL Server. You can include these databases as part of your Office Project Server 2007 SQL Server backup plan and your Office SharePoint Server 2007 or Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 data will be protected.

Office SharePoint Server 2007 and Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 also include versioning and recycle bin functionality to help protect data such as documents and lists from accidental deletion or modification. If you use the optional search feature included with Office SharePoint Server 2007, the content for search is stored both in the search database and in the search index file. Because search data in the database and index must be synchronized, you should only back up search by using backup and recovery tools built in to Office SharePoint Server 2007 such as the Stsadm command-line tool, or the backup and recovery tools available through the SharePoint Central Administration Web site, or Microsoft System Center Data Protection Manager 2007. These tools synchronize the database backup with the search index file backup, and both can be restored together.

We do not recommend that you back up the search databases by using SQL Server. This is because the search indexes are not stored in SQL Server and cannot be synchronized with the search database after a database-only backup. If you must restore a search database backed up with SQL Server tools, Office SharePoint Server 2007 must re-create the index and perform a full crawl of the content.

Protecting configuration settings

If you have customized your deployment, there may be items that you need to back up separately from your normal Office Project Server 2007 and SharePoint Products and Technologies backup procedures. Such items may include:

  • Page or Web part customizations

  • Event handlers

  • Additional Web services

Such customizations vary greatly between organizations. You should determine the needs of your organization and plan for the backup and recovery of any customizations you might have.
