Event Message:

The DNS server is now booting from the registry. New zones or changes to zone information made through the DNS Manager require the DNS server to boot from information stored in the registry. Further changes to zone configuration MUST be made through the DNS Manager as the boot file is no longer being read. The previous boot file has been moved to the backup directory. If you must return to using a boot file use the registry editor to open HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SYSTEM\\CurrentControlSet\\Services\\DNS\\Parameters and delete the value EnableRegistryBoot. Then replace your desired boot file in the system32\\dns directory. Note however that ALL changes to zone information including new zones made through the DNS Manager will be lost.

Information

Explanation:

The Microsoft DNS server creates a boot file on initial installation. The boot file is provided for easy migration from BIND-based DNS servers. The boot file is a BIND-specific implementation and is not a requirement for RFC compliance. If DNS Manager is used to create and administer the DNS zone files the Boot Method will be set to boot from data contained in the Registry. A message is written to the boot file that states all information that has been imported from the boot file now resides in the Registry.

User Action:

To boot from the boot file:

  1. Click Start, and then click Run.

  2. Type regedit and press ENTER.

  3. Go to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/System/CurrentControlSet/Services/DNS subkey.

  4. In the DNS subkey, click Parameters.

  5. If the value is 1, double-click the value and change its value to zero.

  6. Close the Registry and restart your computer.
