Explanation:

If you have manually added or copied a WINS record to the zone root using Notepad or another text editor, verify that the IP address(es) of the WINS server(s) are properly formatted in the WINS record. The addresses must match the addresses of your local WINS servers. The IP address(es) for a WINS record must be entered in a dotted decimal format.@ IN WINS <xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx>Add the WINS IP addresses to the specified file or delete the WINS record and recreate it using DNS Manager. Contact your network administrator to obtain the IP addresses of local WINS servers.

Delete or add the IP addresses to the WINS record: 1. In Windows 2000 Explorer, go to the Systemroot\System32\Dns directory. 2. Double-click the specified file, and select Notepad to open it. 3. Delete the specified line from the file, or add the WINS IP addresses as shown in the explanation. 4. Save and close the database file. 5. Stop and restart the DNS server service. To add a WINS record to the specified file: 1. In DNS Manager, right-click the specified file. 2. Click Properties, and click the WINS Reverse Lookup tab. 3. Use the context sensitive help to configure the record. 4. Click OK. 5. Click DNS on the menu bar, and click Update Server Data Files.
