Creating the LMHOSTS File

Before configuring a computer to use the LMHOSTS file, you must create the primary LMHOSTS file on each computer, name the file LMHOSTS, and save the file in the directory %s ystemroot %\System32\Drivers\Etc.

You can create and change the LMHOSTS file by using a text editor—for example, Notepad—because it is a simple text file. (An example LMHOSTS file named LMHOSTS.sam is provided with Windows 2000 in the directory % systemroot %\System32\Drivers\Etc. This is only an example file; do not use this file as the primary LMHOSTS file.)

The following sections describe the different types of entries that you can create and edit in the LMHOSTS file.
