Back up and restore Dashboard Designer content

Updated: 2009-04-23

PerformancePoint Dashboard Designer has a very simple backup and restore process. It can be used to migrate Dashboard Designer content from one server to another or for retrieving an item that was lost or overwritten.

Migrate Dashboard Designer content

  1. Open Dashboard Designer and connect to the "Test" or "Development" server.

    1. Click the Office button in the upper left corner and then click Options. In the pop-up window, select the "Server" tab.

    2. Confirm that the Server URL and the Server name fields are the same value. Click Connect. Dashboard Designer is successfully connected when Server Options and Permissions are active. Click OK.

  2. Pull all the content from the server to the local workspace file.

    1. Click Refresh to get the latest content from the server.

    2. Click Dashboards in the Workspace Browser. All the dashboards on this server will appear. Select the entire list (CTRL+A.)

    3. On the Home tab, select Open Items from the Actions section.

      Note

Any content on the server that does not exist in a dashboard needs to be opened individually.

    4. Confirm that content from the server has been pulled down to the local workspace file by selecting Dashboards in the Workspace Browser. Compare the list of dashboards in the Server tab with the list of dashboards in the Workspace tab. If they are the same, then all the dashboards have been pulled down. Do this for the KPIs, Scorecards, Reports, Data Sources and Indicators.

  3. Save the workspace file to a secure location as a backup.

  4. Connect Dashboard Designer to the "Production" server.

    1. Click the Office button in the upper-left corner, and then click Options.

    2. In the pop-up window, select the Server tab.

    3. Confirm that the Server URL and the Server name fields are the same value. Click Connect and then click OK.

  5. Click Mark Differences. This will add a pencil icon to all the items in the Workspace Browser. Change any data source or report that needs need to be changed from "Test" or "Development" servers to "Production."

  6. Click Publish All.

    Note

This is the only time that the Publish All command should be used.
