Introduction to Planning Administration Console

Updated: 2008-11-14

Welcome to the Planning Administration Console. You can use the Planning Administration Console to create or manage applications, model sites, users, administrative roles, system settings, and data connections. To connect to Planning Server in the Planning Administration Console, you must be a member of a Planning Server administrative role. After you connect to Planning Server, the options in the navigation pane of the Planning Administration Console are activated according to your role permissions, and you can access applicable tasks.

Important

Although you must belong to an administrative role to connect to Planning Server, all domain users can access the Planning Administration Console by default after it is installed. To make sure a secure Planning Server system, we recommend that you restrict access to the Planning Administration Console by using Internet Information Services (IIS) security. In addition, we also recommend that you restrict membership to Planning Server administrative roles. Users assigned to these roles have permissions to make major configuration changes in the Planning Server environment. For more information about IIS security, see the PerformancePoint Server 2007 Deployment Guide.

Using the links in the navigation pane of the Planning Administration Console, members of administrative roles can do the following:

  • Connection: Type the path of the computer that is running Planning Server to which you want to connect.

  • Applications: Create an application, edit an application, delete an application, lock an application, or take the application offline or online.

  • Model Sites: Create a new model site for a specific application, edit an existing model site, or delete a model site.

  • Users: Find a user in the Planning Server system, add users to or delete users from the Planning Server system, or edit the display name or e-mail address for an existing user. You can also import new users into the Planning Server system by using a comma-separated values (CSV) file.

  • Global Administrator Role: View the current members of this role, and add users to or remove users from the role.

  • User Administrator Role: View the current members of this role. Add users to or remove users from the role for a specific application or for a specific model site in an application.

  • Data Administrator Role: View the current members of this role. Add users to or remove users from the role for a specific application or for a specific model site in an application.

  • Modeler Role: View the current members of this role for a specific application. Add users to or remove users from the role for a specific application or for a specific model site in an application.

  • Session Settings: Specify Planning Server session limits on a per-user and total-user basis. Also, specify a chunking size to indicate the number of rows of data to load to the computer that is running Planning Server on a per-chunk basis. In addition, specify the maximum number of records to return when Planning Business Modeler requests data from the server. Specify the number of seconds before Planning Server times out when you request data from Microsoft SQL Server.

  • Auditing: Specify the maximum size for the audit log file before a new audit log file is created and written to. Specify the maximum size of the SQL Server AuditRecords table to determine when Planning Server will stop accepting user requests and processing new work items. In addition, specify the amount of time (in milliseconds) before the queue is checked for new audit entries. You must use the Planning Server Configuration Manager to change the name or location of the audit log file.

  • Event and Trace Logs: Enable or disable event logging, which writes to the Windows Event Viewer, or enable or disable Planning Server trace logging. Trace logging provides more in-depth and customizable logging than what is written to the Windows Event Viewer.

  • Planning Process Service: Specify the maximum number of work items that are permitted in the queue. Also, specify the amount of time that must elapse before the server checks for new entries on the queue.

  • Workflow: Enable or disable notifications. When you enable notifications, you must specify the name of the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) server. You must also provide the e-mail address that you want to appear in the From line of outgoing notification e-mail messages.

  • Reporting: Planning Server uses SQL Server Reporting Services. Set the location where operational reports are published to and where Planning Server reports are stored.

  • Cancel Checkout: Reset the check-out status of model site objects for Planning Business Modeler.

  • Data Sources: Specify an external data source to connect to the Planning Server system.

  • Data Destinations: Specify an external destination to which the Planning Server system will export data.
