Mobile Device Manager SP1 Upgrade Overview

2/9/2009

You can upgrade your MDM installation to MDM 2008 SP1 from MDM 2008. The following sections describe the upgrade process, the required SQL Server backup procedure, and the upgrade preparation list that needs to be completed before you attempt the upgrade.

Upgrading MDM 2008 to MDM 2008 SP1

MDM 2008 SP1 supports multiple instances of MDM. An instance specifies a separate, independent installation of MDM in a forest or in a domain. Because MDM 2008 does not support multiple instances, Active Directory, including the service connection points (SCPs) and certificate templates must be configured to support this functionality. You will use the Active Directory Configuration Tool (ADConfig) parameters to accomplish these configurations. Also, the MDM server roles, Group Policy infrastructure, Self Service Portal, and MDM Administrator Tools are upgraded in the general upgrade process, and the gateway configuration file is imported onto the MDM Gateway Server.

Note

For more information on the gateway configuration file and certificate object identifiers, see Validating Communications within an MDM Instance.

To upgrade your MDM 2008 installation to MDM 2008 SP1, see Upgrading MDM 2008 to MDM 2008 SP1. You must backup your MDM databases before proceeding with the procedures detailed in this section.

Backing Up MDM SQL Server Databases

Before you proceed with the upgrade process, you must first back up all MDM SQL databases and transaction log files to a protected location. We recommend that you save these files to a server other than the server that is running an MDM SQL database.

The following table lists the databases that should be backed up.

Database MDM Server Role
