Specifying the Method for Assigning Devices to Groups

2/9/2009

The following procedure shows you how to specify the method in which to assign a managed Windows Mobile device to a group. In Mobile Device Manager software distribution, you can assign managed devices to device groups by using server-side targeting or client-side targeting. With server-side targeting, you use MDM Software Distribution Console to move managed devices to one device group at a time. With client-side targeting, you can use Group Policy so that managed devices will add themselves automatically to the device groups.

Important

Regardless of the method that you use to assign managed devices to groups, you must first create the groups by using MDM Software Distribution Console. For more information, see Creating a Device Group.

To specify the method for assigning devices to device groups

  1. In the navigation pane, expand the server that you want to administer, right-click Devices, and then select Options.

  2. In the Devices dialog box, select one of the following:

    • Select Use the Mobile Device Manager Software Distribution console to assign each device to a group or groups to enable server-side targeting.
    • Select Use Group Policy or registry settings already on the devices to enable client-side targeting.
  3. Choose OK.
