There are two methods of backing up your Microsoft Office Project Server 2007 data:

  • Using SharePoint Products and Technologies tools

  • Using SQL Server tools

Important

Choose the option that best fits the needs of your organization. Combining the two options is not recommended.

Which backup method to use depends on the requirements of your organization and the availability of trained resources to manage the process. SQL Server tools offer the most versatile options for recovery, but are more complex to use. SharePoint Products and Technologies tools are simple to use, but only allow recovery to the last full or differential backup, meaning there will generally be some data loss. SharePoint Products and Technologies tools also require the system to backed up during a period of inactivity to ensure data consistency across databases.

For detailed guidance to help you choose which backup and recovery method to use, see Plan for disaster recovery in Project Server 2007.

The remainder of this section provides guidance on how to use SQL Server backup and recovery tools to back up and restore your Office Project Server 2007 databases. Detailed instructions for the use of SharePoint Products and Technologies backup and recovery tools are covered in the following articles:

Important

Designing an effective disaster recovery solution can be a complex task. We highly recommend that you read Plan for disaster recovery in Project Server 2007 before reading this section or implementing any of the procedures described here.
