Managing applications published in an IAG portal

Applies To: Intelligent Application Gateway (IAG)

A Whale Communications Intelligent Application Gateway (IAG) 2007 portal allows you to publish internal networks, file structures, and applications for remote access. This topic describes how to add, remove, and sort applications in portal; restrict applications published in a portal to specific subnets; and specify port numbers for portal applications. For more information about configuring the properties of specific applications published in a portal, see Configuring the properties of applications published by IAG.

Adding, removing, and sorting portal applications

Add, remove, and sort portal applications as follows:

To add, remove and sort portal applications

  1. In the IAG Configuration console, right-click the portal trunk and then click Add.

  2. In the Add Application Wizard, follow the instructions to complete the wizard; for details, click Help.

When you complete the wizard, click Finish. The Add Application Wizard closes, and the application you defined appears in the Applications list. Once you activate the configuration, the application will be accessible to remote users. Repeat for each application you want to add to the portal.

    Note

Some applications require additional setup. For those applications, when you finish adding the application to the trunk, a help window pops up, informing you of the application-specific requirements and providing step-by-step setup instructions where applicable. The help is also available to you any time thereafter, in the General tab of the Application Properties dialog box.

  3. If you want to display the portal applications in alphabetical order, select Sort alphabetically.

If you want to arrange the applications in a different order, do no select Sort alphabetically, and use the up and down arrows to arrange the order of the applications in the list. They will be displayed on the portal page in the order by which they are arranged in the list of applications.

  4. In the main window of the Configuration program, click the Activate icon to save and activate the configuration. A confirmation message is displayed, and the trunk is operational.

Note

We recommend that you activate the option Back up configuration after activation, so that the configuration settings are backed up.

Configuring application subnets

You can restrict any of the applications published in a portal that only servers within the defined subnets are enabled.

When the portal is active and a user requests a URL, the filter first checks the URL against the Application list; if the application is listed here, the filter goes on to check the URL against the subnet list. Only URLs that pass both checks are enabled to the user.

Note

For each application you add, make sure that the application is listed in the IAG domain name system or Hosts file.

To configure application subnets

  1. In the IAG Configuration console, in the Applications area, under the Subnets list, click Add.

  2. On the Add Subnet dialog box, enter the subnet address and mask, and then click OK.

The Add Subnet dialog box closes. The subnet you configured is added to the Subnet list.

  3. Repeat steps 1–2 to define additional subnets.

The applications will be restricted to the defined subnets.

Setting application ports

The port number that is assigned to an application when you create the portal is the port number of the external Web site. If remote users need to access a server other than the IAG server, for example a load balancer, you can modify the application port number, as follows:

To configure application ports

  • In the IAG Configuration console, in the Applications Access Portal area, next to Public Hostname, modify the port number in Port.
