Data Protection Manager Management Pack Readme

Applies To: Operations Manager 2007

The Microsoft Data Protection Manager Management Pack monitors the health and availability of data protection managers that are running Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 (SP4) and later versions.

This readme describes how to install the Data Protection Manager Management Pack in Microsoft System Center Operations Manager 2007.

Before You Import the Management Pack

Before you import the Data Protection Manager Management Pack, you must install the updated Microsoft Operations Manager 2005 Backward Compatibility Management Pack, version 6.0.5000.16. You can download the Backward Compatibility Management Pack at https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=98874.

Note

If you do not install the updated Microsoft Operations Manager 2005 Backward Compatibility Management Pack before you install the Data Protection Manager Management Pack, your installation will fail.

Supported Applications

The Windows Data Protection Manager Management Pack monitors computers that are running Windows 2000 and Windows Server 2003. For the Windows Data Protection Manager Management Pack to function optimally, your computers must meet the following requirement:

  • Each Data Protection Manager must be managed by System Center Operations Manager 2007.

Note

You can run only one localized version of a converted Management Pack at a time. To use a version of the Data Protection Manager Management Pack for a different language, uninstall the Management Pack and then install the version for the desired language.

How to Import the Data Protection Manager Management Pack

Download the latest Windows Data Protection Manager Management Pack files from https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=82105. By default, the installer places the Data Protection Manager Management Pack in its own folder in the following directory: C:\Program Files\System Center Management Packs.

The contents of the Data Protection Manager Management Pack are as follows:

Microsoft.SystemCenter.DPM.mp

Required for discovering and monitoring Data Protection Manager installations.

After you download the Windows Data Protection Manager Management Pack, import it into System Center Operations Manager 2007.

To import the Data Protection Manager Management Pack

  1. In the Operations Console, on the Go menu, select Administration.

  2. In the navigation pane, expand Administration.

  3. Right-click Management Packs, click Import Management Packs, select Microsoft.SystemCenter.DPM (Converted), and then click Open.

  4. Follow the instructions in the wizard.

Optional Configuration

After you import the Data Protection Manager Management Pack, it begins to discover and monitor computers without additional configuration. You can, however, configure the Windows Data Protection Manager Management Pack for your environment and preferences. For example, rules can be disabled by default, and you can enable them. Or, if the performance-measuring rules enabled by default degrade server performance with slow wide area network (WAN) links, they can be disabled. Use the following procedure to enable a rule.

To enable a rule

  1. In the Operations Console, on the Go menu, click Authoring.

  2. In the navigation pane, expand Management Pack Objects and then click Rules.

    Note

    To show rules for the Data Protection Manager Management Pack only, on the toolbar, click Scope, and then under Target, select the check boxes for the data protection manager components.

  3. Under Rules, right-click the rule that you want to turn on, point to Overrides, point to Override the Rule, and then click For all objects of type: <type of object>.

  4. Under Override-controlled parameters, in the Override column, select the Enabled check box.

  5. In the Override Setting column, in the drop-down menu, click True, and then click OK.

Use the following procedure to disable a rule.

To disable a rule

  1. In the Operations Console, on the Go menu, click Authoring.

  2. In the navigation pane, expand Management Pack Objects and then click Rules.

    Note

    To show rules for the Data Protection Manager Management Pack only, on the toolbar, click Scope, and then under Target, select the check boxes for the data protection manager components.

  3. Under Rules, right-click the rule that you want to turn off, point to Overrides, point to Disable the Rule, and then click For all objects of type: <type of object>.
