About This Guide

The Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 R2 Print Services guide provides you with key information to bring your print infrastructure up to date, saving you time and money. Strategically planning your print infrastructure can help you serve your customers more reliably. By analyzing your printing needs, you will be able to design print servers with sufficient memory and spooler capacity. Efficiently designing printer pools can help you avoid problems before they begin and erase performance bottlenecks.

Use this guide to determine the scope of the services and choose to partially or completely redesign your infrastructure. Each phase is thoroughly explained in easy-to-follow steps, helping you to efficiently navigate through the process of managing your infrastructure.

The Infrastructure Planning and Design Guide for Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 R2 Print Services includes the following three-step process:

Step 1: Determine the Scope of the Print Services Project. This step involves determining which parts of the organization’s environment to include in the design and the objectives for the project.

Step 2: Determine the Printers, Servers, and Clients That Will Be Included. The goal of this step is to document the number and type of printers, as well as the servers and clients, in the existing Print Services infrastructure that will be included in the project scope, and to compile a list of clients that will use these printers.

Step 3: Design the Print Services Infrastructure. This step involves determining the number of servers to be deployed in each location, the locations where servers will be placed, and then designing the servers and printers to provide fault tolerance.
