Event ID 16393 — Internet Gateway Device Support

Updated: January 7, 2009

Applies To: Windows Server 2008 R2

BITS can query home routers (Internet Gateway Devices [IGDs]) that support Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) counters and determine how much bandwidth is being used, rather than rely on only the link between the computer and the IGD. This feature is most useful for home users that have several computers connected behind a Network Address Translation (NAT) router.

Event Details

Product: Windows Operating System
ID: 16393
Source: Microsoft-Windows-Bits-Client
Version: 6.1

Message: BITS has encountered an error communicating with an Internet Gateway Device. Please check that the device is functioning properly. BITS will not attempt to use this device until the next system reboot. Error code: %1.

Resolve

Check the Internet gateway device configuration

To resolve this issue, do the following:

To perform these procedures, you must have membership in the local Administrators group, or you must have been delegated the appropriate authority.

  1. Ensure that the Internet gateway device (IGD) supports Universal Plug and Play (UPnP).
  2. If the IGD supports UPnP, verify that the IGD is turned on.
  3. Confirm that a firewall is not blocking UPnP traffic (TCP 2869 and UDP 1900).
  4. Restart the IGD.
  5. Restart the BITS Service. To restart the BITS Service, do the following:
    • Open an elevated command prompt. To open an elevated command prompted, type Start, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as Administrator.
    • Type sc stop bits and then press ENTER.
    • Type sc start bits and then press ENTER.

If the problem persists, check for updates for the IGD from the manufacturer.

Verify

Confirm with your Internet Gateway Device (IGD) vendor that the device supports Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) counters. If the device supports UPnP counters, BITS will automatically retry using the IGD to determine bandwidth.
