Monitor Update Services

Updated: March 10, 2009

Applies To: Windows SBS 2008

You can monitor the performance of Update Services to be aware of any problems with Update Services or with individual update installations, and to confirm successful operation.

View the status of Update Services

You can view the status of Update Services either on the Home page of the Windows SBS Console or through the reports on the Reports tab. The information on the Home page and the Summary Network Report on the Reports tab provide a high-level summary, using the colors red, yellow, and green. The Detailed Network Report on the Reports tab provides more detailed information, such as what happened during the last update synchronization, which computers are missing updates, and what are the synchronization errors.

Note

You must be a network administrator to complete this procedure.

To view the detailed Update Services status

  1. Open the Windows SBS Console.

  2. Click Reports, and then click Detailed Network Report.

  3. In the Details section, scroll to Updates, and then review the update information.

Monitor the use of disk space

It is important that you consider the use of disk space when you are monitoring the status of Update Services. Over time, the location where updates are downloaded and stored may become full. If the storage location becomes full, Update Services cannot continue to download new updates.

For these reasons, you should regularly monitor the amount of free disk space that is available where the updates are stored. You can view the amount of free disk space on all drives on the server that is running Windows SBS 2008. To view the amount of free disk space, open the Windows SBS Console, click Backup and Server Storage, and then click Server Storage.

Important

In some cases, you may want to change the location where Update Services stores the updates. Use the Move Windows Update Repository Data Wizard to change the location.

Note

You must be a network administrator to complete this procedure.

To move the Windows Update Repository Data

  1. Open the Windows SBS Console.

  2. Click Backup and Server Storage, and then click Server Storage.

  3. In the tasks pane, click Move Windows Update Repository Data, and then complete the wizard.
