How to Change the Connection String for a Global Resource

This topic provides steps for changing the connection string for a global resource. You change this connection string to update the database connection configuration for a resource database, such as the catalogs or marketing database. After you change a connection string, you must restart Internet Information Services (IIS).

If you are changing the connection string for the Data Warehouse or a non-Commerce Server 2009 resource (for example, a Commerce Server 2002 resource), you must also reinstall the reports to update the new connection string information. Or, you can use SQL Server Reporting Services to update each report data source object (in the Commerce Server 2009 directories) with the new connection information.

You must reference the same database and server for the Profiles Service connection string (s_ProfileServiceConnectionString) and Site Terms connection string (s_BizDataStroreConnectionString). You cannot reference different databases for these two connection strings.

If you use Commerce Server Staging (CSS) to stage site terms, you must unpack the Profiles resource in the staging environment. You can modify site terms in this staging environment, and then stage them into the production environment.

To change the connection string for a global resource

  1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Microsoft Commerce Server 2009 , and then click Commerce Server Manager.

  2. In the Commerce Server Manager console, in the left pane, expand Commerce Server Manager, expand Global Resources, right-click the global resource you want to configure, and then click Properties.

  3. In the Properties dialog box, on the Connection Strings tab, select the connection string for the global resource that you want to change, and then click Modify.

  4. In the Data Link Properties dialog box, make the required changes, and then click OK.
