Server Infrastructure

Server infrastructure licensing ensures that the computers that are running Windows EBS are in compliance with the licensing agreement.

Aspects

The following is a list of all aspects that are part of this managed entity:

Name Description

Client Access Licensing Compliance

Microsoft Software License Terms for Windows EBS give you the right to install and use the server software. However, every connection to the Windows EBS network requires a Windows EBS client access license (CAL) to provide a network user with access to network resources. In Windows EBS, a single CAL provides access to the product services and resources that are enabled by the integrated server solution.

Domain Controller Availability

A Windows EBS domain controller is a server that is running a version of Windows Server 2008 and that has Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) installed. In Windows EBS, the Management Server and the Messaging Server must be domain controllers. Several checks are made to ensure that the domain controllers are in compliance with the licensing agreement.

Forest Trust Configuration

The Windows EBS domain is at the root of the Active Directory forest. Your Active Directory forest must not have a trust relationship with another forest. If an Active Directory forest trust relationship is detected, Windows EBS attempts to remove it.

Operations Master Roles Assignment

Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) defines five Operations Master Roles (also known as flexible single master operations or FSMO) that are used to perform specialized tasks. The following operations master roles are defined in AD DS:

  • Schema master
  • Domain naming master
  • RID master
  • PDC master
  • Infrastructure master

The PDC master and Domain naming master roles must be assigned to the Management Server to comply with the licensing terms for Windows EBS. If these roles are not assigned, the Management Server automatically shuts down 28 days after the condition is first detected, unless corrective action is taken.

Server Licensing Compliance

The licensing terms for Windows EBS require that the three servers for Windows EBS are used in their intended roles. If there are more than three Windows EBS servers in the domain, the Management Server automatically shuts down 28 days after the condition is first detected, unless corrective action is taken.

Server Policy Loading

Server policies can be successfully loaded only if the servers are in compliance with the licensing agreement and if the license has been activated. Activation helps verify that your copy of Windows EBS is genuine and that it has not been used on more computers than the Microsoft Software License Terms allow. Activation also helps prevent software counterfeiting.
