Configuring DNS for CCF Deployment

In this deployment of CCF 2009 SP1, CCF refers a number of servers by name. These names are used in this documentation; however, the Administrator can use any names for the DNS aliases. This scenario assumes that CCF would be set up on multiple servers; therefore, you create new hosts for each machine.

The server names used here are CCFIIS, CCFSQL, and CCFRS for the IIS server, the SQL server, and the Report Server respectively.

The CCF installers will ask for machine name information before installing the components. CCF then inserts the machine names into the configuration files for the component. It is recommended that, when installing CCF, you use the actual machine names of your system’s machines. The documentation refers to machine names such as CCFIIS but these are meant as examples and may or may not reflect actual machine names.

You can also use alias names to map the names of your actual system machines to the names used throughout this document.

To assign an alias to a machine use the following procedure:

  1. On the <DomainController> machine, click Start, point to All Programs, then Administrative Tools, and click DNS.
  2. Expand the <DomainController> node.
  3. Expand the Forward Lookup Zones node.
  4. Click on the <CCFFQDN>.
  5. Right-click on the right-hand pane.
  6. Select New Alias (CNAME)….
  7. On the New Resource Record dialog, enter the alias name as CCFIIS and the fully qualified domain name of the <IISSvr> machine. After this, the <IISSvr> machine will also be identified by the name CCFIIS.
  8. Repeat the Steps 1 to 6 for the <SQLSvr>. In Step 6, enter the Name as CCFSQL and the IP address as the IP address of the <SQLSvr> machine to identify <SQLSvr> machine as CCFSQL.
  9. Repeat the Step 1 through Step 6 for the <CCFRS> if you are using the SQL Reporting Service. In Step 6, enter the Name as CCFRS and the IP address as the IP address of the <CCFRS> machine.
  10. After adding the required hosts, click Done.
