This step-by-step guide provides the instructions that you need to set up AppLocker in a test lab environment. We recommend that you do not use this guide in a production environment. Step-by-step guides are not intended to be used to deploy Windows operating system features without additional documentation and should be used with discretion for feature evaluation.
The purpose of this guide is to help administrators become familiar with AppLocker. Each scenario provides basic information and procedures that administrators can use to start configuring and deploying AppLocker in their network environments.
AppLocker was introduced in Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows 7 and has been enhanced in Windows Server 2012 and Windows 8. These enhancements allow you to manage packaged apps and packaged app installers, which are commonly known as Windows 8 apps. This step-by-step includes new content for managing packaged apps. For more information about changes in AppLocker, see the AppLocker Technical Overview.
