Synthetic Transactions and the Windows PowerShell Event Log

Applies To: Exchange Server, Operations Manager 2007 R2

This management pack uses Windows PowerShell to drive the synthetic transactions that are used to monitor Exchange 2007 servers. Each time a synthetic transaction runs, events are logged to the Windows PowerShell event log on the local server. Depending on the frequency that synthetic transactions are run, the Windows PowerShell event log can fill up unless the Overwrite property is adjusted. The system generates errors when these limits are reached.

By default, the size of the Windows Server 2003 server logs is 512 KB. The default event log Overwrite property does not allow overwriting of events less than seven days old.

Therefore, we recommend that you review your organization’s policies and then configure the size of the event logs on the local server and the Overwrite property to avoid error conditions resulting from the increase in events due to running synthetic transactions.
