Determine the Best Time to Run Resource-Intensive Rules and Monitors

Applies To: Exchange Server, Operations Manager 2007 R2

The Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 Management Pack contains a set of rules, monitors, and synthetic transactions that run according to a schedule. The rules, monitors, and synthetic transactions listed in the table are resource-intensive and could impact CPU utilization on the Exchange server when they are running. To mitigate the impact on the Exchange servers, these rules, monitors, and synthetic transactions use a Sync Time parameter to minimize the number of simultaneously running rules or monitors. The script run times are also distributed to ensure that only one script runs at a time. See the table below for a list of rules, monitors, and synthetic transactions and the default Sync Times.

Note

Sync Time does not imply frequency; it is only used to distribute the rule and monitor run times over time.

You may want to adjust the time to tune it for best performance in your environment. To change the time that the rule, monitor, or synthetic transactions run, override the Sync Time for the one you want to change. When you override the Sync Time for a rule, ensure that you use the same override for the corresponding monitor, and vice-versa, so that rules and corresponding monitors do not run twice. This does not apply to rules that do not have corresponding monitors.
