Install the WSUS 3.0 SP2 Administration Console

 

Applies To: Windows Server Update Services, Windows Small Business Server 2011 Standard, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2003 with SP2, Windows Server 2008 R2 with SP1

The Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) 3.0 SP2 Administration Console is installed together with the server software when you run the WSUS Setup procedure. After the WSUS server is installed, you can manage WSUS from any computer that meets the specifications that are listed in WSUS Administration Console software requirements.

You must perform a separate installation of the Administration Console software on every computer (other than a WSUS server) from which you want to run the WSUS Administration Console.

Install the WSUS 3.0 SP2 Administration Console

You can install the WSUS Administration Console from the WSUS Setup program or from the command line.

To install the WSUS 3.0 SP2 Administration Console by using WSUS Setup

  1. Log on to the computer by using an account that is a member of the local Administrators group.

  2. Click Start, and then click Internet Explorer.

  3. Browse to the Windows Server Update Services 3.0 SP2 Download Site.

  4. Select and download the WSUS 3.0 SP2 file that is appropriate for your environment. When you are prompted to run or save the file, click Save and save the download file to the local file system.

  5. When the download is finished, click Open Folder.

  6. On the Installation Mode Selection page, select the Administration Console only check box, and then click Next.

  7. Read the terms of the license agreement. Click I accept the terms of the License Agreement, and then click Next.

  8. The final page of the installation wizard will inform you whether the WSUS 3.0 SP2 installation was successful.

To install the WSUS 3.0 SP2 Administration Console by using the command line

  1. Log on to the computer by using an account that is a member of the local Administrators group.

  2. Click Start and then click Internet Explorer.

  3. Browse to the Windows Server Update Services 3.0 SP2 download site.

  4. Select and download the WSUS 3.0 SP2 file that is appropriate for your environment. When you are prompted to run or save the file, click Save and save the download file to the local file system.

  5. Open a command prompt (Cmd.exe) as an administrator. To open a command prompt as an administrator, click Start. In Start Search, type Command Prompt. At the top of the Start menu, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator. If the User Account Control dialog box appears, enter the appropriate credentials (if requested), confirm that the action it displays is what you want, and then click Continue.

  6. In the Command Prompt window, open the folder that contains the downloaded WSUS Setup file.

  7. Type the following command that matches the computer platform:

    • WSUS30-KB972455-x86.exe /q CONSOLE_INSTALL=1

    • WSUS30-KB972455-x64.exe /q CONSOLE_INSTALL=1

  8. No additional information will display in the Command Prompt window. It takes several minutes to install the Administration Console. When the installation process has completed, Windows Server Update Services Console displays in the list of programs on the Start menu.
