Configure WSUS by Using the WSUS Server Configuration Wizard

Applies To: Windows Server Update Services, Windows Small Business Server 2011 Standard, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2003 with SP2, Windows Server 2008 R2 with SP1

This article describes how to configure the Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) 3.0 SP2 settings by using the WSUS server configuration wizard. You must configure WSUS immediately after you install the WSUS server software on a computer.

The WSUS server configuration wizard automatically runs when WSUS Setup has completed regardless of which of the following methods you used to install the WSUS server software:

Note

If the WSUS server configuration wizard does not automatically start after WSUS server software has installed, you can manually start the WSUS server configuration wizard by using the following procedure: Start the WSUS 3.0 SP2 configuration wizard.

You can alternatively configure WSUS settings by using the WSUS Administration Console, but we recommend that you use the WSUS server configuration wizard the first time that you configure these settings. By using the WSUS server configuration wizard, you make sure that the minimal settings are sufficiently configured for the WSUS server to perform its first synchronization. You can then adjust and optimize settings by re-running the WSUS server configuration wizard or by using the WSUS Administration Console.

For more information about the WSUS Administration Console, see the Install the WSUS 3.0 SP2 Administration Console section in this deployment guide and the Customize the WSUS Administration Console section in the WSUS 3.0 SP2 Operations Guide.

You must configure the upstream server and the proxy server before you can configure updates. To accomplish this, the following statements must be true:

  • The server firewall is configured to enable client computers to access the server.

  • The downstream server can connect to the upstream server.

  • The user account that is being used to run the wizard can access the proxy server.

The WSUS server configuration wizard will prompt you for the following information:

  1. The corporate proxy server information.

  2. The port number that this computer will use to connect to an upstream WSUS server.

For more information about how to set up the firewall and proxy server to use with WSUS, see the Prepare the Network and Server for WSUS 3.0 SP2 section in this deployment guide.

Important

To run the WSUS server configuration wizard, you must be logged on to the WSUS server by using an account that is a member of the local Administrators group or a member of the WSUS Administrators group.
