How To: Reinstall Microsoft Forefront Security for Exchange Server on Windows EBS

This article describes how to reinstall Microsoft® Forefront™ Security for Exchange Server (FSE) in the Windows Essential Business Server (Windows EBS) software suite.

This process requires the following steps:

  • Step 1: Uninstall FSE from Windows EBS Messaging Server

  • Step 2: Install FSE on Windows EBS Messaging Server

Warning

Before following these steps, it is recommended that you completely back up FSE. For more information about how to back up and restore FSE, see Backing up and restoring Forefront Security for Exchange Server on the Microsoft Web site (https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc765430.aspx).

Step 1: Uninstall FSE from Windows EBS Messaging Server

Follow this procedure to uninstall FSE from Windows EBS Messaging Server.

Note

When you remove FSE, custom settings are saved to the configuration (.fdb) files in the Program Files(x86)\Microsoft Forefront Security folder. The Incidents database file, Statistics.xml file, and licensing information are also stored in this folder. To use the default settings when you reinstall FSE, delete the folder. Otherwise, the custom settings will be applied when you reinstall FSE.

To uninstall FSE

  1. Log on as an administrator to Windows EBS Messaging Server.

  2. Click Start, click Run, type services.msc, and then click OK.

  3. Select the FSCController service name, and then click Yes to stop the service. This will also stop the Microsoft Exchange Information Store and Microsoft Exchange Transport services.

  4. In Control Panel, click Programs and Features.

  5. Select Microsoft Forefront Security for Exchange Server, and then click Uninstall. Click Yes to begin the removal.

  6. On the Uninstall Complete page, click Finish.

  7. Restart the computer.

Step 2: Install FSE on Windows EBS Messaging Server

Follow this procedure to reinstall FSE on Windows EBS Messaging Server.

To install FSE

  1. Log on as an administrator to Windows EBS Messaging Server.

  2. Open the following folder in Windows Explorer:

    C:\Program Files\Windows Essential Business Server\Bin\FSS

  3. Double-click Setup.exe. This opens the Install Shield Wizard.

  4. On the Welcome page, click Next.

  5. On the License Agreement page, read the license, and then click Yes.

  6. On the Customer Information page, enter values for the User Name and Company Name, and then click Next.

  7. On the Installation Location page, select Local Installation, and then click Next.

  8. On the Installation Type page, select Full Installation, and then click Next.

  9. On the Quarantine Security Settings page, select one of the following modes, and then click Next.

    • Secure Mode. Causes all messages and attachments that are delivered from Quarantine to be rescanned for viruses and filter matches. This is the default setting.

    • Compatibility Mode. Allows messages and attachments to be delivered from Quarantine without being scanned for filter matches. (Messages and attachments are always scanned for viruses.) FSE identifies these messages by placing special tag text in the subject line of all messages that are delivered from Quarantine.

  10. On the Engines page, approve or change the antivirus engine selection, and then click Next.

    Note

    The Microsoft Antimalware Engine and four other randomly selected engines are chosen. You can modify the engine selection, choosing a maximum of five engines, including the Microsoft Antimalware Engine.

  11. On the Engine Updates Required page, read the warning about engine updates, and then click Next.

  12. On the Proxy Information page, select Use Proxy Settings and enter the name or IP address of Windows EBS Security Server. Enter 8080 for the port number. When you are finished, click Next.

  13. On the Choose Destination Location page, accept the default destination folder, and then click Next.

  14. On the Select Program Folder page, click Next.

  15. On the Start Copying Files page, review the data. Use the Back button if you need to make changes, and then click Next. A progress bar indicates that the files are being copied.

  16. On the Restart Exchange Transport Service page, click Next to recycle the service.

    Note

    If you click Skip, you must manually restart the service for FSE to begin scanning incoming e-mail.

  17. When the status changes to All services started, click Next.

  18. On the Restart Exchange Information Store Service page, click Next to recycle the service.

    If you click Skip, you must manually restart the service for FSE to begin scanning e-mail.

  19. When the status changes to All services started, click Next.

  20. On the Install Shield Wizard Complete page, Click Finish to complete the installation.
