Use the System Center 2012 – Data Protection Manager (DPM) planning topics to prepare your environment for DPM deployment.

  • Plan DPM server deployment—Figure out the number of DPM servers you’ll need and where to put them. Plan how you’ll deploy the SQL Server instance used for the DPM database.

  • Plan DPM storage—Determine how much storage you’ll need to store replicas and recovery points for protected data.

  • Plan for data backup and protection—Decide what workloads and applications you want to protect, plan for protection groups and how you’ll backup and recover data.

  • Plan for DPM security—Understand DPM security considerations, including antivirus and firewall requirements, and the permissions model.
