Change privacy and other browser settings

Internet Explorer for Windows Embedded 8.1 Handheld makes it easy to change privacy settings on your device and control your browsing experience.

To change basic Internet Explorer settings

  1. In Internet Explorer, tap MoreHandheld8 more ellipses > Settings. (You can also access Internet Explorer's settings through Settingsphone start icon settings on the App list.)
  2. Change any or all of the following settings:
    • Website preference. Select Mobile version or Desktop version to set which version of a website you see.
    • Use the address bar button for. Select Favorites, Stop/refresh, or Tabs.
  3. Tap Delete history to erase browser history, cookies and passwords, and temporary Internet files from your device.

To change advanced Internet Explorer settings

  1. In Internet Explorer, tap MoreHandheld8 more ellipses > Settings. (You can also access Internet Explorer's settings through Settingsphone start icon settings on the App list.)
  2. Tap Advanced settings, then change any or all of the following settings:
    • Allow access to my location. Select this option to allow websites to access your location information. You'll be notified when a website requests your location. For more info about Microsoft's location awareness policy and Windows Phone, see Location and my privacy FAQ.
    • Get suggestions from Bing as I type. Select this option if you want to allow Bing Search to suggest websites as you type into the address bar—potentially a big time saver.
    • Reduce data use by sending URLs to the Data Sense service. Select this option if you want to help reduce the amount of data you use while browsing. Note that some mobile operators let you browse certain websites without counting it against your data limit, and that benefit may be limited on certain networks if you select this setting. When you browse other sites, Data Sense will often save you data. (Not all mobile operators offer Data Sense.)
    • Send browsing history to Microsoft to help improve Bing services. Select this option if you want to help improve Bing.
    • Use SmartScreen Filter to help protect against unsafe websites. Select this option if you want to be warned about websites that have been reported to Microsoft as unsafe or suspicious.
    • Send a Do Not Track request to websites you visit. Select this option to signal to websites that you don't want your browsing to be tracked. (Even though you’ve expressed this preference, websites may continue to engage in activities you might view as tracking. This depends on websites’ specific practices.)
    • Cookies from websites and apps. Select Accept all, Block some, or Block all to set which cookies Internet Explorer will accept. If you select Block some, Internet Explorer will:
      • Block third-party cookies that do not have a compact privacy policy.
      • Block third-party cookies that save information that can be used to contact you without your explicit consent.
      • Restrict first-party cookies that save information that can be used to contact you without your implicit consent.
    • Open links from other apps in. Select A new tab or The current tab to define where a webpage is opened from another app.
    • Default search provider. Select Bing or Google.
    • Website file storage. Select Allow sites to store files on my phone to allow websites to use your device storage to store things like in-progress emails or RSS feeds. Tap Manage storage if you need to free up some storage space.
