The Search Box Web Part displays the box in which a user enters a query string for a search. You can configure the properties of this Web Part to change how the Web Part appears and responds to users.
To configure Search Box Web Part properties
Use this procedure to configure the properties of the Search Box Web Part.
Important
You must have at least Designer permissions on the Search Center site that you are configuring to complete this procedure.
Configure Search Box Web Part properties
Navigate to the Search Center site.
In the Search Center, click the Site Actions menu, and then click Edit Page. The Search page opens in Edit mode.
In the Search Box Web Part, expand the Edit drop-down list, and then click Modify Shared Web Part.
In the Search Box tool pane, expand the Scopes Dropdown node.
Click in the Dropdown mode box to display the drop-down list. In the Dropdown mode list, select one of the following available options:
Do not show scopes dropdown
Does not display a scope drop-down list. This is the default setting for the Search Box Web Part.
Show scopes dropdown
Displays the scopes defined in the scope display group in the scopes drop-down list.
Show, and default to ‘S’ URL parameter
Displays the scopes defined in the scope display group in the scopes drop-down list. Also, adds the scope to the page URL using the ‘s’ parameter.
Show, and default to contextual scope
Displays the scope drop-down list and automatically selects the “This site” or “This list” scope.
Show, do not include contextual scopes
Does not display the “This site” and “This list” contextual scopes in the drop-down list of available scopes.
Show, do not include contextual scopes, and default to ‘S’ URL parameter
Displays the scopes defined in the scope display group in the scopes drop-down list. Does not display the “This site” and “This list” contextual scopes in the drop-down list of available scopes and adds the scope to the page URL using the ‘s’ parameter.
In the Dropdown label box, type the text you want to be displayed as the name for the scope drop-down list on the Search page.
In the Fixed dropdown width (in pixels) box, type the maximum number of pixels allowed for the box that contains the drop-down list on the Search page.
Expand the Query Text Box node.
In the Query Text Box label box, type the text you want to be displayed as the name for the box in which users enter query terms on the Search page. This setting is optional.
In the Query text box width (in pixels) box, type the maximum number of pixels allowed for the box in which users enter query terms on the Search page. By default, the width is set to 280 pixels.
In the Additional query terms box, type the text that you want to append to all queries submitted by users. This text can be additional terms or a property filter. For more information about keyword terms and property filters, see Operations for Office SharePoint Server 2007.
In the Additional query description label box, type the text that explains the purpose of additional query terms that are added to the user’s query.
In the Query box prompt string box, type the text that displays in the query box. The text displays only until the user selects the query box.
Select the Append Additional Terms To Query box, if you want to display the additional query terms that are added to all user’s queries. Clear this check box if you do not want the additional query terms to display in the query box.
Expand the Miscellaneous node.
In the Search button image URL box, type the path of the image file that displays when the mouse pauses over the button that submits a query. This image must by 16 × 16 pixels. By default, the value in this box is /_layouts/images/gosearch.gif.
In the Search button right-to-left image URL box, type the path of the image file that displays when the mouse pauses over the button that submits a query. This image must by 16 × 16 pixels. By default, the value in this box is /_layouts/images/ goRTL.gif.
In the Active search button image URL box, type the path of the image file that displays when the mouse pauses over the active search button. This image must by 16 × 16 pixels. By default, the value in this box is /_layouts/images/gosearch.gif.
In the Active search button right-to-left image URL box, type the path of the image file that displays when the mouse pauses over the active search button. This image must by 16 × 16 pixels. By default, the value in this box is /_layouts/images/ goRTL.gif.
Select the Use site level defaults check box, if you want to use the settings set at the site collection level. By default, this check box is not selected.
Select the Display advanced search link check box, if you want to display a link to a search page that has advanced options. By default, this check box is selected.
In the Advanced Search page URL box, type the URL of the page that contains advanced search options. Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 includes a default advanced search page for this site collection, /SearchCenter/Pages/advanced.aspx, that contains the Advanced Search Box Web Part.
In the Scope Display Group box, type the name of the scope display group that you want to display in the scopes drop-down list. By default, the value of this property is Search Dropdown.
After you have made the changes that you want, click OK to close the tool pane.
