Configure multiple Groove Server Manager front ends

This article describes how to configure an onsite Groove Server Manager with multiple Internet Information Services (IIS) front ends and a single SQL Server back end.

Before you begin

Before you start the following procedure, address the following prerequisites:

Configure Groove Server Manager with multiple IIS front-end servers

Multiple Manager front ends are typically required to accommodate capacity and availability requirements or for compliance with network and perimeter zone rules. The following procedure provides guidelines for a multi-front-end Groove Server Manager system.

To configure Groove Server Manager with multiple IIS front-end servers, follow these steps

  1. Address the requirements in Before you begin.

  2. After installing an initial Groove Server Manager, install each additional Groove Server Manager IIS front end on a separate server, as described in Install and configure IIS for Groove Server Manager, repeating the settings that are used for the first front end.

    Note

    Be sure to specify the same SQL Server name and database as used in the first installation. You will also need to enter the Master Password that was specified for the first installation.

  3. Follow your company’s post-installation configuration practices for each Manager IIS front end.

  4. Configure the Groove Server Manager SQL back end to control which Groove Server Manager IIS front end will initiate Groove Server Relay SOAP communications, as follows:

    Note

    By default, all Groove Server Manager IIS front ends initiate communications with Groove Server Relay.

    1. Using SQL Server Management Studio (or equivalent software), expand the gmsDB database and open the gmsServers table.

    2. Select one Groove Server Manager IIS front end to be enabled for Relay server messages and disable all other front ends for Relay server messaging. For each front end server that you need to enable or disable, in the ComputerName column, find the row that contains the host name of the server.

    3. For the selected front end, set the column labeled EnableRelayServerSynchronization to one of the following:

      1 = Manager front end synchronizes with Relay servers

      0 = Manager front end does not synchronize with Relay servers

    4. Restart the IIS administrative interface on the Groove Server Manager IIS front end for which you specified the change in the database.

  5. If Active Directory is integrated with your Groove Server Manager system, designate the Manager IIS front end that will initiate directory synchronization with Active Directory as follows:

    1. Identify the Manager IIS front end that will initiate directory synchronization with Active Directory. Only one front end can initiate integration synchronization with Active Directory. If multiple Manager front ends are enabled to run the Groove Server Manager Active Directory Synchronization Service (typically set during installation), the last front end that was enabled for directory synchronization initiates synchronization, by default. Although the synchronization service may be running on other Manager front ends in the system, it has no effect and those servers will not be involved in synchronization.

    2. To configure a Manager front end for Active Directory synchronization that was not configured for directory integration during installation, click Start from the identified server, select Groove Server Manager Configuration, and then select the SSL and Directory Integration options to enable them. Click Apply and then OK to finish.

    3. To confirm that the correct Manager front end is integrating with Active Directory, log on to the Groove Server Manager administrative Web interface, select the Manager domain, and then click the Directory Integration tab. Confirm that the field, Currently syncing node displays the system that you intended for directory integration.

  6. Restart the IIS Groove Server Manager Synchronization Service on each Groove Server Manager front end, to process your configuration change. Optionally, disable the Manager Synchronization Service on the systems that are not designated to synchronize with Active Directory.
