Step 7: Refreshing the Catalog Cache

After the catalog data has been fully migrated to the production site, the site needs to be dynamically refreshed to reflect the changes.

For the purposes of this scenario, open Commerce Server Business Desk on each of the production servers, and refresh the catalog. For instructions, see Refreshing and Publishing a Catalog. This step updates that catalog cache in the Retail Solution Sites.

Dynamically Refreshing the Catalog Cache

The Retail Solution Site is configured with site-wide caching enabled. This does not allow for the site to dynamically update its changes without a manual restart of Internet Information Services (IIS), or a refresh of the site through the local Business Desk.

Use one of the following methods to dynamically refresh the catalog cache:

  • Manually restart IIS. This option is not recommended since all the Internet services for the Web server are shut down to allow the Commerce Server application to refresh its caches. This incurs downtime in the system, and in many cases is unacceptable in a production environment when the experience of the user may be impacted. For information about restarting IIS, see Restarting IIS and Commerce Server Services.
  • Use Business Desk to refresh through the production servers. You can invoke an instance of the Business Desk application that is configured as part of your production site to refresh the caches on the production Web servers.
