Modifying Direct Mailer Speed

Direct Mailer is designed so that you can limit the number of messages per hour it processes so the job does not overload the production Mail server. To do this, you modify the Messages Per Hour property, which determines how many messages the Direct Mailer processes in an hour. If the Messages Per Hour property is set to zero (0), Direct Mailer processes the messages as fast as possible.

To modify Direct Mailer speed

  1. Expand Commerce Server Manager, expand Global Resources, right-click Direct Mail on <SQL Server Name>, and then click Properties.

  2. In the Properties dialog box, select Messages Per Hour, and in the Selected Property Value box, type the number of messages per hour that you want Direct Mailer to send.

If you set Selected Property Value to zero (0), Direct Mailer processes messages as fast as possible.

  3. Click OK.

  4. Restart Direct Mailer. For information about restarting Direct Mailer, see Restarting Direct Mailer.

The new setting is applied immediately to all Direct Mailer jobs.

Besides the Messages Per Hour property, there are other factors that determine how fast Direct Mailer processes messages. For example:

  • Direct Mailer performance is dependent on the Collaboration Data Objects (CDO) for Microsoft Windows 2000.

  • Direct Mailer calculates the delay value for each pipeline cycle, based on overall performance and throttling settings.

  • Direct Mailer performance is closely related to Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) server performance and throttling requirements.
