How do I roll back the master boot record and partition table if they become corrupted?

Applies To: System Center Data Protection Manager 2007

DPM System Recovery Tool features a Disk Layout (Bare Metal) recovery set that backs up disk and partition information. This recovery set can recreate partition(s) on a new disk if the existing hard disk becomes corrupted or needs to be replaced.

The Disk Layout (Bare Metal) recovery set backs up the following disk information:

  • Master boot code.

  • Partition table.

  • Partition and volume information.

  • 1MB Logical Disk Manager (LDM) database (applies to dynamic disks only).

To roll back disk and partition information to a new disk

  1. Remove the original disk.

  2. Install the replacement disk.

  3. Boot the system to the Boot Client.

  4. From the Recovery Center, roll back the system using the saved Disk Layout (Bare Metal) recovery set.

  5. Select the replacement disk to accept the changes.

  6. The contents of the disk will be erased to accept the new configuration.

Note

You can change disk parameters such as volume size and cluster size when rolling back the Disk Layout (Bare Metal) recovery set to the replacement disk.
