Install the SCOM 2007 agent on managed servers (FAST Search Server 2010 for SharePoint)

A simple and secure way to install the SCOM 2007 agent is to install the agent manually on each managed server.

Adding a search node as an Agent Managed server

SCOM 2007 includes a Discovery Wizard that automatically installs the SCOM 2007 agent on managed servers. However, there are requirements associated with this kind of installation that you can avoid when you install manually instead.

The Discovery Wizard uses a process that is known as agent push installation. In a secure, firewalled environment, agent push installations do not work. Many firewall ports must be opened and various Windows services such as file and printer sharing must be enabled. The SQL Server Broker must be enabled too, and the SQL Server service must run using an account that has permission to perform Active Directory lookups. The Local System account does not have the required permission to do this.

You can avoid the requirements related to using the agent push installation if you install the agent manually on each managed server. The process can also be automated and performed without user interaction because the agent MSI installer accepts command-line parameters for unattended installations.

Manually install the SCOM 2007 agent

Perform the following pre-configuration steps when you plan to add managed servers to SCOM 2007 using manual agent installation.

  1. Open the Administration view in the SCOM Operations Console.

  2. Click Settings in the Administration tree view.

  3. Double-click Security in the Settings pane.

  4. Select the setting Review new manual agent installations in pending management view.

The agent software is available from both the SCOM 2007 installation media and the installed Program Files folder:

  • <Installation media>\agent\amd64

  • <Program Files folder>\System Center Operations Manager 2007\AgentManagement\amd64

Important

You must install the 64-bit (amd64) version of the agent. The 32-bit (x86) version does not give access to the correct set of registry keys used by 64-bit applications such as FAST Search Server 2010 for SharePoint.

After you have performed the pre-configuration steps, do the following:

  1. Run the MOMAgent.msi installer on each monitored server.

  2. Enter the name of the management group. This should be the same management group name as specified when you install SCOM 2007. The name can be found in the main window caption of the Operations Console.

  3. Enter the host name of the SCOM 2007 server in the Management Server field.

  4. Enter the management server port number. Use the supplied default. An exception for this port is automatically inserted in the Windows Server 2008 firewall by the SCOM 2007 R2 installer. No additional firewall configuration is needed unless you have other physical firewalls in the network. If that is the case, you should create exception rules that enable traffic using TCP connections from each monitored server (random port) to the SCOM 2007 server on port 5723.

  5. Enter the Agent Action Account. Enter Local System, or another account that has read access to the FAST Search Server 2010 for SharePoint installation folder and registry. The required permissions are available for any user account that is a member of the FASTSearchAdministrators local NT security group.

The following is an example of an automated agent installation:

Important

Hotfix KB954049 must be applied on all SCOM 2007 SP1 agent installations. (This is not necessary for SCOM 2007 R2 agents).

Important

Use the R2 agent with SCOM 2007 R2 servers, and the SP1 agent with SCOM 2007 SP1 servers.

Tip

If an anti-virus service is running, exclude the folder <Program Files>\System Center Operations Manager 2007\Health Services State\Health Service Store\ from the anti-virus scan.

Approve agents in the Operations Console

  1. From the SCOM Operations Console, open Administration, then Device Management and then Pending Management. Managed nodes appear in this list several minutes after you install the agent.

  2. Right-click on each node and then click Approve. The nodes appear in the Agent Managed folder in a minute.
