DPM 2010 Quick Start Guide

Applies To: System Center Data Protection Manager 2010

The System Center Data Protection Manager (DPM) 2010 Quick Start Guide provides minimalized instructions for installing and configuring DPM 2010.

Use this guide if you are configuring a DPM 2010 installation for evaluation or development purposes. To install and configure DPM 2010 in a production environment, see Deploying DPM 2010 (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=179219).

The information in the DPM 2010 Quick Start Guide assumes that the user has a strong understanding of the deployment process for a server-based application. For complete step-by-step instructions on how to install DPM 2010, see Installing DPM 2010 (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=179156).

Note

Before installing DPM 2010, for important information about this release, you should read DPM 2010 Known Issues (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=184690).

Minimum Hardware Requirements

The following table shows the minimum hardware requirements for a DPM 2010 installation. In a production environment, the hardware requirements might be greater. For information about the recommended hardware requirements for deploying DPM 2010 in a production environment, see Hardware Requirements (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=187430).

Component Minimum requirement

Processor

1 GHz, dual-core CPU or faster

RAM

4 GB

For more information about how DPM manages memory, see DPM and Memory.

Pagefile

0.2 percent of the combined size of all recovery point volumes, in addition to the recommended size (generally, 1.5 times the amount of RAM on the computer).

For more information about configuring the DPM pagefile size, in the DPM Operations Guide, see Managing Performance.

Disk space for DPM installation

  • DPM installation location: 3 GB

  • Database files drive: 900 MB

  • System drive: 1 GB

Note

The system drive disk space requirement assumes that you will install a dedicated instance of SQL Server from DPM Setup. If you use a remote instance of SQL Server, this disk space requirement is considerably less.

Disk space for storage pool

  • 1.5 times the size of the protected data

For more information about calculating capacity requirements and planning the configuration of the disks, in Planning a DPM 2010 Deployment, see Planning the Storage Pool.

Software Requirements

DPM 2010 requires a 64-bit version of a supported operating system on the DPM server, the prerequisite software, and the DPM application. Each computer that DPM protects must also meet or exceed minimum system requirements.

The DPM server must be located in a Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2008, or Windows Server 2003 Active Directory domain.

The supported operating systems for the DPM server are a 64-bit version of Windows Server 2008 R2 or Windows Server 2008, Standard or Enterprise Edition. DPM 2010 does not support 32-bit or Itanium architecture–based operating systems.

Important

Before installing DPM on one of the supported operating systems, there are important updates and hotfixes that you must apply. For more information see DPM Server Software Prerequisites.

DPM 2010 is designed to be run on a dedicated, single-purpose computer. The DPM server is not supported on any of the following:

  • A computer on which the Application Server role is installed

  • A computer that is a System Center Operations Manager management server

  • A computer on which Exchange Server is running

  • A computer that is a node of a cluster

Note

You must have administrative privileges to install DPM.

DPM requires a supported 64-bit or 32-bit version of SQL Server 2008 SP1, Enterprise or Standard Edition, for the DPM database. This guide assumes that you will install a dedicated instance of SQL Server from DPM Setup. If you want to use a remote instance of SQL Server as a part of your DPM deployment, see Installing DPM Using a Remote Instance of SQL Server 2008.

DPM Setup automatically installs all other software prerequisites if they are not already installed or enabled.

For complete information about DPM 2010 software requirements, including a list of prerequisites, see DPM 2010 Software Requirements (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=187362).

Post-Installation Configuration Tasks

After you install DPM 2010, you must perform a series of required configuration tasks before you can start protecting your data. For more information, see Required Configuration Tasks (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=187785).

You can also perform the following optional DPM configuration tasks at any time after you install DPM:

  • Subscribe to alerts notifications

  • Configure the SMTP server

  • Publish DPM alerts

  • Install DPM Management Shell

  • Enable end-user recovery

  • Install the Shadow Copy Client software

For more information about optional configuration tasks, see the following topics:
