How to Erase a Tape

Updated: April 21, 2010

Applies To: System Center Data Protection Manager 2010

You can reuse an expired tape without erasing the contents of the tape. However, you can erase a tape to remove sensitive or critical information, if you choose.

To erase a tape

  1. In DPM Administrator Console, click Management on the navigation bar, and then click the Libraries tab.

  2. In the display pane, expand the tape library or stand-alone tape drive and select the tape that you want to erase.

  3. In the Actions pane, click Erase tape.

To erase a tape using DPM Management Shell

  • Use the following syntax to erase a tape:

    Start-TapeErase [-Tape] <Media[]> [[-JobStateChangeHandler] <JobStateChangedEventHandler> ] [-Verbose] [-Debug] [-ErrorAction <ActionPreference> ] [-ErrorVariable <String> ] [-OutVariable <String> ] [-OutBuffer <Int32> ]

For more information, type "Get-Help Start-TapeErase -detailed" in DPM Management Shell.

For technical information, type "Get-Help Start-TapeErase -full" in DPM Management Shell.
