Install PowerPivot for SharePoint and Analysis Services

You can install PowerPivot for SharePoint (which includes an Analysis Services server instance that runs in SharePoint integrated mode) and a native mode Analysis Services server instance side-by-side on the same computer. Each instance is used for very different purposes:

  • SQL Server Analysis Services (PowerPivot) is used to load and query PowerPivot data on a server. It has no other purpose. You cannot use it with other Analysis Services data sources. You cannot connect to it in Business Intelligence Development Studio or other authoring tools to create custom, multi-purpose OLAP data sources.

  • Analysis Services, in native mode, is used for traditional OLAP, with ROLAP, HOLAP, and MOLAP storage. If you have or want to create Analysis Services databases and cubes that you want to use with PowerPivot or other applications, you can install a native mode Analysis Services on a computer that also hosts PowerPivot for SharePoint.

A native mode Analysis Services instance can be version SQL Server 2008 R2, SQL Server 2008, or SQL Server 2005. If you install SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services, you must use the tools provided in that release to administer and use your server.

A side-by-side installation requires that you install each instance independently. You can install Analysis Services and PowerPivot for SharePoint in any order. The only requirement is that PowerPivot for SharePoint is installed as a 'PowerPivot' named instance.

Note

You must be a local administrator to run SQL Server Setup.

To install PowerPivot and native mode Analysis Services side-by-side

  1. Run SQL Server Setup and use the Feature Selection page to install Analysis Services and any other SQL Server features that you want to use, including Database Engine and Reporting Services. You can specify the default instance if it is available, or specify a named instance. Be sure to add authoring and management tools, such as Business Intelligence Development Studio and SQL Server Management Studio, so that you can Analysis Services data sources and Reporting Services reports.
