About This Guide

The Infrastructure Planning and Design Guide for Microsoft® Forefront™ Identity Manager 2010 provides actionable guidance for designing a Forefront Identity Manager (FIM) 2010 infrastructure. FIM supports a variety of deployment topologies. Each of the main components may be installed separately or in combination on individual servers. Additionally, the FIM Service and the FIM Portal can be scaled out to multiple servers.

In More Detail

The Infrastructure Planning and Design Guide for Microsoft Forefront Identity Manager 2010 includes the following five-step process:

Step 1: Define the Project Scope. This step will identify the connected data systems that are in scope for the FIM infrastructure project.

Step 2: Determine the Required Roles. The feature selections that were made in Step 1 will be the basis in Step 2 for determining the required server components.

Step 3: Design the Forefront Identity Manager Synchronization Service Instances. In this step, the number of FIM Synchronization Service instances will be determined, along with placement, sizing, and fault-tolerance strategies of each server and database.

Step 4: Design the Forefront Identity Manager Service Infrastructure. This step will determine how many FIM Service and FIM Portal servers are necessary for performance and fault-tolerance requirements.

Step 5: Design the FIM Certificate Management Infrastructure. This step designs the supporting infrastructure, if it was determined in Step 2 that the FIM Certificate Management (CM) feature set will be required.
